Voortaan bestaan wij niet meer op onszelf, maar zijn wij ingelijfd bij Christus en vormen wij samen zijn lichaam, de kerk. . . . De doop is een symbool van de schoonmaak van onze ziel, die niet minder is dan een complete vernieuwing van ons leven. We komen als nieuw tevoorschijn en met gewassen harten en levens kunnen we Gods toekomst in” (nos. 30, 34). Passages like these raise the following questions: Are the sacraments then efficacious tes- timony to the power of grace? Do they actually accomplish what they signify by conferring the grace that they signify (see Council of Trent, Decree on the Sacraments, Canon 6)? Is the visible sacramental sign not only expressive but also effective in communicating grace, making clear where baptism is linked with salvation and regeneration (Gal 3:27; Rom 6:4; Tit 3:5; Eph 5:26)? What is the nature of the relation, if any, between baptism and the salvation of Christ? 2. Why a New Catechism? Now, rather than focus on the Protestant nature of GC , I’d like to consider the fundamental question, “Why a new catechism?” The answer to this question is clearly expressed by the authors: “Voor alle gelovigen geldt dat zij in hun eigen tijd het geloof moeten kunnen verwoor- den. In de manier waarop de vragen gesteld worden, klinkt regelmatig onze tijd door: een seculiere, plurale tijd, waarin meer de kritiek op het christelijk geloof doorklinkt dan ooit tevoren. Een catechismus is per definitie een product van de eigen tijd, een verwoording van het christelijk geloof in de eigen context. Dat maakt de Gewone Ca- techismus tot een boekje dat geschreven is tegen de achtergrond van het westerse christendom dat in een seculiere omgeving moet verwoorden wat het is om op God te vertrouwen, Jezus te volgen en Gods nieuwe wereld te verwachten (p. 11). Essentially, then, the authors claim in this quotation that the questions raised in GC , for example, about man’s search for happiness (nos. 1-5), reflect the background context of a society that is secular and pluralistic, and hence this context has shaped the formulations of these questions and the corresponding answers given in GC .
