Perspectie 52 Giulia Casadei MA and Fokke Wouda MA confusion did not involve merely the press; the Catholic hierarchy as well oscillated between different vocabularies: in the official documents the use of the Latin term communicatio in sacris was the more common, as we can see in several conciliar decrees 4 , in the Directory on Ecumenism of May 1967 5 , and, moreover, in the following documents published by the Secretariat for Christian Unity 6 . On the other hand, it is important to notice that, for his speeches, Paul VI also used the term intercommunion rather than communicatio in sacris 7 , although never in written documents. The Secretariat itself always combined its general investigations about intercommunion with terminological discussions and elaborated, in its internal discussions, outlines and proposals for terminological definitions 8 . Thus, problems concerning terminology historically have come with the birth and spread of the practice of forms of intercommunion.
