2015-30 52 Prof. dr. A.H.M. (Fred) van Iersel (1954) is a Roman Catholic theologian and ethicist. He fulfils the endowed Chair for military chaplaincy studies at Tilburg University (the Netherlands) since 1994, focusing on religion and ethics in the context of the armed forces. He has been leading research and educational programs on the religious dimension of moral leadership in the military. Together with dr. van Baarda, Fred van Iersel established the Office for Military Ethics for the Dutch Department of Defense in 1999. He published two manuals on Military Ethics and the Practice of its Education (2002 and 2004 respectively). He published numerous contributions on religions as factor of war and peace and on the chaplain’s role, tasks and education. He co-founded the Journal of Military Ethics and, more recently he co-established the bilingual electronic journal www.ethicsandarmedforces.com (2013).Fred van Iersel is a former Chief of Chaplains of the Dutch Roman Catholic prison ministry. He is also advisor for theology and policy development for the Dutch Roman Catholic Chaplaincy Service. He also teaches Catholic Social Teaching at several schools for theology in the Netherlands and Belgium.
