The Study on Ecclesiology as a Commentary of the 1991 Canberra Statement on Unity as Koinonia In 1991-1992, following the World Council of Churches Canberra Assembly, a new Commission on Faith and Order was appointed to continue the work on ecclesiology. It reaffirmed in two successive meetings – Rome 1991and Dublin 1992 - the need for a study on “Ecumenical Perspectives on Ecclesiology”. The first step of the Dunblane Plan, in which the F&O Secretariat would collect and summarise relevant ecumenical material in ecclesiology, was being implemented. A consultation to be jointly held with the Bossey Ecumenical Institute in July 1992 would focus ecclesiological concerns in different regions of the world with particular focus on evangelical, Pentecostal and charismatic movements. 22 But during that period the major focus of Faith and Order was the preparations for its 1993 World Conference 23 . Held in Santiago de Compostela, the World Conference was entirely dedicated to a central theme of the Ecclesiology study, Koinonia 24 . Learning from each other about our different ecclesiologies, wrote the author of one of the reports, “we perceive the need for a substantial study to be undertaken by the Faith and Order Commission on the nature of the Church and the Unity We Seek in the light of koinonia”. Compostela made several other recommendations related to the study on Ecumenical Perspectives on Ecclesiology.
